Jew Hatred on Campus Calls Out San Francisco State for Campus Anti-Semitism

Campus:

Editor's Note: The following letter was sent yesterday by JewHatredonCampus.org founder David Horowitz to San Francisco State University President Leslie Wong explaining the reasons why SFSU was ranked among the 10 Most Anti-Semitic College Campuses in America and to offer our assistance in rectifying this dismal rating. In this letter, Horowitz argues that the actions of the student group General Union of Palestinian Students (GUPS) on SFSU's campus violate campus policy and so the group should be investigated and be stripped of campus privileges and funding.

Dr. Leslie E. Wong
President
San Francisco State University

Dear President Wong,

My organization, “JewHatredonCampus.org,” has published a list of the 10 Most Anti-Semitic college campuses, which includes San Francisco State University. Our list has been published on websites that reach more than 100 million viewers.

The specific events meriting the inclusion of San Francisco State on this list include:

  • The sociopathic president of SFSU’s General Union of Palestinian Students (GUPS), Mohammad G. Hammad, who wrote numerous threatening and anti-Semitic posts on social media describing his wish to attack students, teachers and Israeli leaders, support terrorism, and radicalize his fellow students in GUPS.

  • Hammad’s posts included such items as “I think about killing a lot.  And some of you are usually the targets of my daydreams” and “You know what?  Israelis ARE colonizers, there is literally no way around it. And you know what else?  My heroes have always killed colonizers. I literally see nothing wrong with this. And my only regret is that not all colonizers were killed” and “Oh/And tomorrow is [hopefully] the day that I find out if I will be the President of the General Union of Palestine at my school/...Hopefully I'll be able to radicalize half of our population and bring them back with me as fighters.”  Hammad left campus only after Jewish groups exposed his postings.

  • GUPS holds annual “Israel Apartheid Week” events designed to portray Israel, the only liberal democracy in the Middle East, as an apartheid state. Recent events have featured “die-ins” and false gravestones engraved with the names of Palestinians which were then read aloud in the center of campus. This event is part of an international genocidal campaign to delegitimize and destroy the state of Israel.

  • GUPS disrupted a celebration of Israel Independence Day by protesting the entire event in the middle of campus.

  • An event was held on “Pinkwashing” the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “Pinkwashing” is a term used by anti-Israel activists to claim that pro-Israel forces highlight Israel’s strong support of gay rights—Israel is the only nation in the Middle East which fully protects the rights of gays and women— in order to obscure their supposed mistreatment of the Palestinians.

  • Jewish students on campus report being verbally assaulted by members of GUPS and being called names such as “Nazis” or “baby killers.”

We believe that these activities violate San Francisco State University’s policy on “Standards for Student Conduct” which states that:

The university is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy living and learning environment for students, faculty, and staff. Each member of the campus community should choose behaviors that contribute toward this end. Students are expected to be good citizens and to engage in responsible behaviors that reflect well upon their university, to be civil to one another and to others in the campus community, and contribute positively to student and university life… Student behavior that is not consistent with the Student Conduct Code is addressed through an educational process designed to promote safety and good citizenship and, when necessary, impose appropriate consequences.

Additionally, San Francisco State’s policy on “Race, Color, National Origin, Sexual Orientation, or Disability” holds that:

The California State University complies with the requirements of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Americans with Disabilities Act and the regulations adopted thereunder. No person shall, on the grounds of race, color, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be otherwise subjected to discrimination, including harassment, under any program of The California State University. Under Title VI, San Francisco State University is obligated to investigate all discrimination complaints, including harassment in an unbiased, thorough manner.

Evidently, in the eyes of the San Francisco State administration, Jewish students are not protected under these policies. This is the primary reason for San Francisco State’s inclusion in the list of the 10 Most Anti-Semitic campuses, and one we would like you to remedy.

These actions, which have been led by the General Union of Palestinian Students (GUPS) on your campus, violate San Francisco State’s anti-discrimination policy and create a hostile environment for Jewish and pro-Israel students on your campus. Why is GUPS receiving funding and other campus privileges from San Francisco State, when its very purpose violates San Francisco State University policy?

As an organization dedicated to combating campus anti-Semitism, we offer our assistance in rectifying this disturbing situation on your campus and ensuring that Jewish students at San Francisco State University can live and study in an environment free from fear and harassment.

I would recommend that your first step be to conduct an immediate inquiry into whether the organization General Union of Palestinian Students, which is responsible for these actions, is violating your “Standards for Student Conduct” and “Race, Color, National Origin, Sexual Orientation, or Disability” policies. If you conclude this is the case, then you should remove their campus privileges and funding. This will send a strong message that harassment and intimidation of any minority, including Jews, will not be tolerated at San Francisco State.

Please contact me at the address below to let me know your plan of action, or if there is any way we can assist you to ensure that San Francisco State University once again becomes a safe and welcoming environment for Jewish students.

Respectfully,

David Horowitz
