The Associated Student Government Senate (ASG) at Northwestern University narrowly passed a resolution Thursday morning urging the University to divest from six corporations that do business with Israel. The resolution, sponsored by a group calling itself Northwestern Divest, received 24 yea votes and 22 nay votes in a secret ballot. NU Divest wants the university to stop doing business with Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Hewlett-Packard, G4S, Caterpillar and Elbit Systems.
The resolution urges ASG to form an “investment transparency task force” to look into investments.
Hagar Gomaa, an Egyptian-American supporter of the resolution, snapped at opponents who said they felt uncomfortable with it, using class warfare and racism to color her rhetoric. She said, “Discomfort is felt by every person of color on this campus. We feel discomfort any time we bring up an unpopular opinion or voice a controversial issue. To those who say this divestment bill makes you uncomfortable, I say: Check your privilege.”
Nathan Bennett, opposing the resolution, said, “NUDivest has linked themselves to BDS through their events, through their website and through the use of their handbook. If this bill does pass, it should be nakedly clear what it is, and that is a firm part of the BDS movement.”
NUDivest has protested that its goal is divestment, not boycott or sanctions. The group produced a video depicting supporters voicing their reasons for their support.
