The past several weeks have been tense at San Diego State University, where posters linking some students to terrorist groups have sparked a campus protest, a lengthy meeting between students and administrators and an organized call for the school’s president to resign. It began last month when the David Horowitz Freedom Center in Sherman Oaks placed around SDSU posters naming seven students who allegedly have allied themselves with Palestinian terrorists to perpetuate the boycott, divest and sanctions — commonly known as BDS — campaign against Israel and promote “Jew Hatred” on campus.
In the past few months, issues relating to the Israel-Palestine conflict and the broader issue of anti-Semitism have come to the forefront of administrative discourse on campuses across California. Citing recent incidences of anti-Semitism — a swastika painted onto a Jewish fraternity house at UC Davis and a UCLA student questioned about her ability to stay unbiased based on her religion — the UC Board of Regents took it upon itself to draft a set of Principles Against Intolerance, approved back in March.

San Diego State University has agreed to review its speech policies to ensure they are in “balance” with anti-harassment policies following protests over posters critical of Palestinian student groups. The posters, which were hung as part of a campaign by the David Horowitz Center for Freedom, assert that the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement is “a Hamas-inspired genocidal campaign to destroy Israel, the world’s only Jewish state,” and also identify the names of students and faculty members who are associated with the Muslim Student Association (MSA) and Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).
SDSU controversy: In defense of free speech
San Diego Union Tribune
May 4, 2016
Are students who support the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) effort to isolate Israel — on the grounds that it is an apartheid state that persecutes Palestinians — de facto terrorists? That is an absurd statement. We sympathize with the Muslim students at San Diego State University who were labeled terrorists by people opposed to BDS who used online templates supplied by conservative provocateur David Horowitz to print inflammatory posters. Their targeting is awful. They had ample cause to stage a protest last week.
David Horowitz issued the following response:
This editorial begins with a bald-faced lie - neither I nor my posters claimed that SJP activists or any SDSU students were terrorists - the claim was they conducted campaigns to support Hamas terrorists and spearheaded the Boycott Divest movement which is funded by Hamas. The editorial goes downhill from there. I have threatened no one's free speech. In fact the only people whose free speech is threatened are those who oppose SJP's genocidal goal - the destruction of the Jewish state. It is I who will have to have security officers present at my speech to see 1) that I can deliver it without obstruction and 2) that I can deliver it without suffering physical harm. Shame on the Union Tribune for lending moral support to activists whose goal is the destruction of the only democracy in the Middle East.

The David Horowitz Freedom Center recently launched its newest campus poster campaign challenging the atmosphere of rampant Jew-hatred rising on American campuses. The posters appeared on five campuses — UC Santa Barbra, San Diego State University, UC Santa Cruz, UCLA and UC Berkeley — and targeted the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which the posters identify as a “Hamas-inspired genocidal campaign to destroy Israel, the world’s only Jewish state.” Several posters also named a number of prominent BDS activists on each campus and exposed their alliance with the Palestinian war of annihilation against Israel. A selection of the posters are featured below.

On the day I was scheduled to speak at USC this week, a column appeared in the Daily Trojan, titled “David Horowitz Does Not Belong On Campus.” The author, an Iranian student named Lida Dianti, justified her desire to ban me from speaking by claiming that I was a racist and anti-Muslim, and that I “vilified Palestinians.”
It is I who will have to have security officers present at my speech to see 1) that I can deliver it without obstruction and 2) that I can deliver it without suffering physical harm. Shame on the Union Tribune for lending moral support to activists whose goal is the destruction of the only democracy in the Middle East.
